Jorrocks - Derby

This former coaching inn and grade 2 listed building in Derby’s Market Place dates back prior to 1648 where it is first mentioned in a deed. Over recent years it has undergone several name changes from its original name of The George to Lafferty’s and now to its current name of Jorrocks.

In 1993 repairs were required in the pubs cellar where the impact of barrels from the cellar drop had left their mark on the concrete floor. As the workmen removed the old concrete and dug down to create new foundations a grizzly discovery was made as a skull was unearthed. The police were called and the skull was taken away for forensic examination, but later returned as it was very old and therefore didn’t warrant any further investigation. The skull now takes pride of place behind the bar and can easily be seen by patrons of the pub.

The temperature was a constant 25 degrees all round the room, EMF & Ion reading were normal throughout.

Dowsing Session

At the far of the building, this was originally an outside courtyard

Whilst Sue was taking answers from Anne, the spirit did not seem to want to talk using the pendulum however, a strange knocking could be heard when listening to the voice recorder which was placed on the table. There is complete silence except for Karl who was asking questions and there is no explanation for the knocking which was heard. Later on Eleanor informed Sue that she had asked the spirits to knock or just to let us know in a different way if they did not wish to use the pendulum.

Glass Divination

We made contact with a boy aged around 4, he was not very talkative and the glass moved very slightly, he says he was lost and doesn’t need our help. The boy lived in this area but died apparently in the brook, his sister was meant to be looking after him. During our glass moving footsteps were heard above, so Tina, Chris, John and Phillip went to have a look, nobody or thing could be found in the room above, we were all occupied watching the glass when the footsteps were heard. Sue said her back was freezing all the way through, and when we had finished her body temperature went back to normal.

Planchette

Automatic Writing Séance with Planchette in rear left corner of bar. The Planchette was moving all the time and active, it went off the paper the first time and was to move onto a second sheet. Various questions were asked, when the sheet was full a third sheet of paper was placed on the board and the young boy came back, he told Tina his name was Luke. Luke was enjoying drawing and the Planchette and it would not stop moving, which was the answer for yes. When we asked the question “do you want to be taken into the light” the Planchette moved so we took this as a “YES”. Luke by now was getting tired so we stopped and said we will talk to him later.

Conclusion: There were no abnormal readings during the séance the gradual increase in temperature continued after the séance ended, no E.M.F fluctuations were detected.

Rocking Spirit Board (Cellar)

We made contact with on a lady who used to own or run the pubic house or inn, but she did not want to disclose any information, perhaps she just watching over to make sure everything is run to her satisfaction. There were spirits present but they did not appear to want to communicate so we closed the session.

Conclusion: There was a noticeable increase in temperature at the start of the session with fluctuations throughout, the temperature returned to the earlier level after, no E.M.F fluctuations were detected.

Cellar Vigil

Flashes of light were seen, they were coming from a strip light on the ceiling above John’s head, which was not switched on. There was a person standing behind John, three spirits were present at the far end of the cellar and noises were heard emanating from that area. An extra foot was seen in the circle by Tina and Karl, Sue and John felt sick, this was caused by Luke as they could both taste dirty water. The cellar is an active room and it seems to be a place where spirits seem to congregate. Leanne started to feel sick so the circle was closed and John took her out of the cellar. The remainder of the group tried to recreate the light flashing, we tried everything we could think of at the time, however were unable to recreate the phenomena.

Sensory Deprivation Séance

Séance held in rear corner of left hand corner of bar the participants were blindfolded, sitters were Phil, Tina, Sue, Anne & Eleanor.

The spirits that commutated with us were a military man, Luke and a lady named Shelly, who was connected with a member of the group. Luke was standing by Sue and she was unable to stop shaking until the séance ended. The military man communicated through Eleanor and Phillip, both felt that they had been stabbed in the ribs (4^th rib up), He was wearing a pale blue tartan kilt. There ware also two unknown spirits who were standing by the door way just watching.

It was strange using the blindfolds, the sitters seemed to experience more sensations of being touched. As you are unable to visualize the other members of the séance so you only sense what is happening around your space.

Rocking Spirit Board (Blindfold)

Participants: - Chris, Sue, Anne and Frank

This turned out to be more difficult than we thought, again the participants donned blindfolds. We started be trying to establish a rhythm to enable the ball bearing to move or least start to travel around the board. At one point the four sitters were sure the ball had been removed, and everyone else in the room could not stop laughing.

A few questions were asked, but we could not really count the answer as the board was not exactly held straight. We thought it would be easy to control the board as we normally use the board in total darkness however it is a lot harder that it sounds. Maybe more practice is needed by everyone if we intend to proceed with this experiment.

Conclusion

This is an active location and after researching our results and investigating further as usual we will more than likely be left with more unanswered questions which will call for a further visit.
